I have spent the majority of my working life feeling like a square peg in a round hole
I’m good at my job. I’ve developed a great career. There’s many aspects of my job that I love but there’s always this rub that I just don’t fit. And I’m a square peg with relatively round edges so how must all the other shaped pegs feel? A lot of organisations are starting to understand that if they want to attract and retain different shaped pegs, they’re going to have to make some changes. They’ll specifically search for the triangle peg, or they’ll offer mentoring to the rectangle peg, or sometimes they’ll wave a hexagonal flag (but only on special occasions). What these organisations won’t admit to, is that they’re failing to change the shape of the hole, so they simply end up trying to reshape these beautiful unique pegs into the familiar round peg shape because that’s the one that doesn’t rub.
I don’t want to feel that rub anymore. I’d love to hear from you if you’re a peg that’s found your perfect fit, or if your an organisational equivalent to a one of those children’s shape sorters. I’ll be blogging about this and my podcast which I will launch in October will cover all peg related topics….so please get in touch and share your stories, so we can work together to work this out.
